Khmer Rouge

Japanese: クメール･ルージュ（英語表記）Khmer Rouge

It means "Red Khmer (people)" in French. It is a general term for the Cambodian left, from anti-French pro-Communist to Communist parties. In the narrow sense, it refers to the Cambodian Communist Party. The Khmer People's Party, which descended from the Viet Minh-affiliated Khmer resistance faction, joined the Sangkum (People's Socialist Community) formed in 1960 to form the Sangkum Left Faction, but was suppressed by Sihanouk, who led Sangkum, and went underground in 1967. When Sihanouk was dismissed in a coup by Lon Nol in 1970, the Kampucheans immediately joined forces with Sihanouk to form the Kampuchean National United Front, which launched a domestic struggle and entered the capital, Phnom Penh, in 1975.

フランス語で〈赤いクメール(の人たち)〉の意味。反仏容共派から共産党までのカンボジアの左翼の総称。狭義にはカンボジア共産党を指す。ベトミン系のクメール抵抗派の流れをくむ人民党は，その一部が1960年結成のサンクム(人民社会主義共同体)に参画し，サンクム左派を形成したが，サンクムを指導するシアヌークに弾圧され，67年から地下活動に入った。70年にロンノルによるクーデタでシアヌークが解任されると，直ちにシアヌークと結んでカンプチア民族統一戦線を結成し，国内闘争を展開，75年に首都プノンペンに入城した。
