The inferior colliculus, together with other auditory relay nuclei, functions to analyze pitch and determine the direction of sounds.
[Red nucleus ruber]
A pair of large nerve nuclei at the level of the superior colliculus that receive fibers from the motor cortex of the cerebrum and the cerebellar nuclei. They then give off the red-bulbar and rubrospinal tracts, which control involuntary movements.
