A Buddhist monk who translated Buddhist scriptures in the 4th century during the Six Dynasties period in China. His Chinese name was Kumarajiva. He was from the Central Asian country of Kiji. His father was an Indian named Kumarajiva, and his mother was the sister of the King of Kiji. He followed his mother to India to study Buddhism in Mahayana and Hinayana. Fu Jian tried to welcome him by force, but after the fall of the Former Qin Dynasty, he was welcomed by Yao Xing, King of the Later Qin Dynasty, in 401 and lived in Chang'an. He began translating the Zazen Samadhi Sutra, and translated 35 volumes and 294 volumes in eight years, correcting the Gyogi Buddhism and conveying Nagarjuna's view of emptiness.
