Sulfur Islands

Japanese: 硫黄列島 - いおうれっとう
Sulfur Islands
A volcanic archipelago on the Mariana Ridge, located south-southwest of the Ogasawara Islands in Tokyo. Also known as the Volcanic Islands. It belongs to Ogasawara Village, Ogasawara Subprefecture. It consists of three islands, Kita-ioto, Io-to, and Minami-ioto, which are arranged almost equidistant from north to south. Io-to is the largest and the only island with a flat plateau. Minami-ioto and Kita-ioto are steep volcanic islands with significantly developed sea cliffs. Minami-ioto is 3.54 km2 and Kita-ioto is 5.57 km2 , and both are uninhabited. After World War II, they were a United States Trust Territory, but were returned to Japan in 1968. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Air Base Unit is located on Io-to. Kita-ioto is located at the southern end of Ogasawara National Park. The entire island of Minami-ioto is designated as a national natural monument and a pristine natural environment conservation area. In 2011, Kita-ioto and Minami-ioto were registered as natural World Heritage sites.
