Sulfur Islands

Japanese: 硫黄列島 - いおうれっとう

A volcanic archipelago on the Mariana Ridge, located south-southwest of the Ogasawara Islands in Tokyo. Also known as the Volcanic Islands. It belongs to Ogasawara Village, Ogasawara Subprefecture. It consists of three islands, Kita-ioto, Io-to, and Minami-ioto, which are arranged almost equidistant from north to south. Io-to is the largest and the only island with a flat plateau. Minami-ioto and Kita-ioto are steep volcanic islands with significantly developed sea cliffs. Minami-ioto is 3.54 ^km2 and Kita-ioto is 5.57 ^km2 , and both are uninhabited. After World War II, they were a United States Trust Territory, but were returned to Japan in 1968. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Air Base Unit is located on Io-to. Kita-ioto is located at the southern end of Ogasawara National Park. The entire island of Minami-ioto is designated as a national natural monument and a pristine natural environment conservation area. In 2011, Kita-ioto and Minami-ioto were registered as natural World Heritage sites.

東京都，小笠原諸島の南南西に位置する，七島マリアナ海嶺上の火山列島。別称火山列島。小笠原支庁小笠原村に属する。北から北硫黄島，硫黄島，南硫黄島の 3島からなり，南北にほぼ等距離に配列。硫黄島が最大で唯一の平坦台地状の島。南硫黄島，北硫黄島は険しい火山島で海食崖が著しく発達している。南硫黄島は 3.54km²，北硫黄島は 5.57km²でともに無人島。第2次世界大戦後アメリカ合衆国信託統治領であったが 1968年日本に返還。硫黄島に海上自衛隊航空基地隊が所在。北硫黄島は小笠原国立公園の南端に属する。南硫黄島は全島が国の天然記念物，原生自然環境保全地域に指定されている。2011年北硫黄島，南硫黄島が世界遺産の自然遺産に登録された。
