Keller, Helen

Keller, Helen
Born June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama
Died: June 1, 1968. Westport, Connecticut. American female educator. Full name Helen Adams Keller. At 19 months old, she lost her sight and hearing due to a serious illness (presumably scarlet fever), and was therefore unable to speak. At the age of six, her parents consulted Alexander G. Bell about Keller's education, and Anne Sullivan was put in charge of her education. Sullivan herself had recovered some of her sight by then, but had once been blind. She was a graduate of the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston, and was 20 years old at the time. Sullivan began her education in March 1887, and within a month she had taught Keller how to speak. Thanks to Sullivan's tireless guidance and the results of her education at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Boston and the Wright-Humason School for the Deaf in New York, Keller became proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and general subjects. In 1900, he entered Radcliffe College and graduated with honors in 1904. Sullivan's abilities as a teacher were just as astonishing as Keller's talents. Sullivan remained his devoted companion until his death in 1936. Keller subsequently devoted herself to the welfare of the blind, deaf, and mute, including making numerous lecture tours both at home and abroad, and visited Japan in 1937, 1948, and 1955. She is the author of many books, including The Story of My Life (1903), Out of the Dark (1913), My Religion (1927), and Let Us Have Faith (1940).

Keller, Gottfried

Born: July 19, 1819, Zurich
Died: July 15, 1890, Zurich Swiss novelist. He aspired to be a painter but failed, and turned to literature. He was decisively influenced by the philosophy lectures of Feuerbach that he heard at the University of Heidelberg, and produced masterpieces of poetic realism that combined a keen sense of reality with humor, based on a modern-day humanism. His highly autobiographical novel Der grüne Heinrich (1853-55, revised 1879-80) is particularly famous, and is one of the masterpieces of the German liberal arts novel. His other works include the collection of short stories Die Leute von Seldwyla (2 parts, 56, 73-74), Sieben Legenden (Seven Legends) (72), Züricher Novellen (78), Das Sinngedicht (Allegorical Tales) (81), the novel Martin Salander (86), and Gesammelte Gedichte (Poems) (83).

The Story of My Life(1903),『暗黒の中から』Out of the Dark(1913),『私の宗教』My Religion(1927),『入信のすすめ』Let Us Have Faith(1940)など多くの著作がある。
