A politician belonging to the distinguished Athenian family of the Alcmeonidae. Four people are known by this name. (1) When Cylon and his associates seized the Acropolis before 630 BCE with the aim of establishing a tyrannical government, he besieged it with the citizens as archon, deceived and killed Cylon and his associates. As a result, this family was temporarily banished from Athens as "unclean." (2) His son, Megacles, the son of Alcmeon, married Agariste, the daughter of Cleisthenes, the tyrant of Sicyon, and during the period of the three-party conflict in Athens in the 6th century BCE after Solon's reforms, he led the "Coast Party" and tried to maintain Solon's government.
