The first treadle stocking knitting machine was invented by the Englishman William Lee in 1589, and later in 1864 William Cotton invented a machine that used a similar principle to knit many socks at the same time, and an improved version of this became widely used as the "Ladies' Cotton-type Fully Fashioned Stocking Knitting Machine" (which produces flat knitted fabric with variable width to fit the shape of the foot when sewn together). This was a flat knitting machine that used whisker needles, and was widely used in Japan until the 1950s.

イギリスのリーWilliam Leeが1589年に発明した足踏靴下編機が最初のもので，その後1864年にコットンWilliam Cottonがこれと同様な原理で多数の靴下を同時に編成する機械を考案し，その改良型が〈婦人用コットン式フルファッション靴下編機〉(縫い合わせると足の形になるように幅を変化させて平面状の編地を作るもの)として広く普及した。これは〈ひげ針〉による横編機で，日本でも1950年代にかなり使用された。
