…Although he was a talkative man and his stories tended to focus on the heroic deeds of his youth, he was portrayed in Homer's epic as an elderly man who was respected by all. In the historical period, there were three places named Pylos in the western Peloponnese Peninsula, and Pausanias' (2nd century) Guide to Greece records Pylos in the Messenia region (a little north of present-day Pylos, also known as Navarino) as Nestor's castle. In 1939, American archaeologist C.
