He was a member of the Seizan school of the Jodo sect of Buddhism. He studied under Toshiki, the 32nd abbot of Komyo-ji Temple in Ao, Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture). After serving as the head priest of Yorin-ji Temple in Bizen (Okayama Prefecture), he became the 35th abbot of Komyo-ji Temple in 1682. He was banished from Edo, Osaka, and Yamashiro by the shogunate following a doctrinal dispute over Sukezo's Endonkai Hogi. He was also ostracized by his generation at Komyo-ji Temple.
