The world's largest lava plateau, occupying the northwestern part of the Deccan Plateau. Approximately 65 million years ago, as the Indian subcontinent (present-day Indian peninsula) was moving north from the southern hemisphere, large amounts of basaltic lava repeatedly erupted from numerous vents. Today, the western half of the plateau has been lost, and the coast of the Arabian Sea has become a 1,000m cliff, with numerous flat cross-sections of lava flow layers exposed. Its total volume is over 700,000 km3 , covering an area of 500,000 km2, and stretching 1,500 km from east to west and 1,400 km from north to south. A single lava flow can be traced for over 200 km.
