Awano [town] - Awano
A former town in Kamitsuga County in western Tochigi Prefecture. Occupying the eastern foot of the Ashio Mountains, most of the area is mountainous. Produces konjac, rice, and strawberries. Famous for its cedar and cypress. The road along the Kasuo River was once an important transportation route to the Ashio Copper Mine. Incorporated into Kanuma City in January 2006. 177.32 km2 . Population: 10,627 (2003).

栃木県西部，上都賀(かみつが)郡の旧町。足尾山地東麓を占め，大部分は山地。コンニャク，米，イチゴを産する。スギ，ヒノキの産地として有名。粕尾川沿いの道路はかつて足尾銅山への重要輸送路であった。2006年１月鹿沼市へ編入。177.32km2。１万627人（2003）。
