Osaran - Osaran

Japanese: オサラン - おさらん
Osaran - Osaran
A small orchid that grows on the bark of tropical forests in southern Japan. The Japanese name comes from the pseudobulbs, which resemble the reeds of a loom. There are a number of pseudobulbs. In spring, a new pseudobulb grows at the end of an old one, and two leaves develop. The leaves are narrowly oblong, 5-8cm long, and fall off in winter. In June-July, a flower stalk emerges between the leaves, and usually one or two flowers bloom. The flowers are white except for the lip, half-open, and about 1cm in diameter. The dorsal sepals are about 8mm long. The lateral sepals have jaws 3-4mm long at their base. The lip is broadly wedge-shaped and divided into three lobes, with the middle lobe being yellow.
