...In America, this triggered the establishment of over 100 clubs of various sizes, which are said to account for about 10% of all American book sales. In West Germany, Bertelsmann established the Lesering in 1950, which successfully implemented a system of distributing books through bookstores, and became the world's largest book club with 3 million members. In Japan, the All Japan Book Club was established in December 1969 as a tripartite cooperation between publishers, distributors, and retailers, following the announcement of plans by foreign book clubs to enter the market.
