Silver tree

Japanese: ギンヨウジュ（英語表記）silver tree

An evergreen tall tree of the Proteaceae family native to South Africa, with beautiful, dense, silvery-white leaves. It is used as a garden tree in South Africa, but in Japan, where there is a lot of rain in the summer, the roots are prone to rot and it is difficult to grow. The leaves are lanceolate with dense silky hairs on both sides, about 7 cm long and 2 cm wide, have no petioles and are closely attached to the branches. As it grows in arid areas, the leaves are hard and do not fall off easily, so old leaves remain all the way to the base of the branches and the entire tree is covered in leaves. It has dioecious flowers, pine cone-like flower heads 3 to 5 cm in diameter, and are yellowish-white in color.

南アフリカ原産のヤマモガシ科の常緑高木で，銀白色の葉が木全体に密につき美しい。現地などでは庭園木として利用されているが，日本では夏季に雨が多いため，根が腐りやすく育てにくい。葉は披針形で両面に絹状の短毛が密生し，長さ約7cm，幅約2cmで葉柄がなく枝に密着する。乾燥地に育っているため葉質はかたく，また落ちにくい性質があるので，古い葉が枝の基部にまで残り，木全体が葉におおわれる。雌雄異花，マツの球果状で径3～5cmの頭状花をつけ，黄白色である。
