Kinyo Wakashu - Kinyo Wakashu

Japanese:
Kinyo Wakashu - Kinyo Wakashu

This was the fifth imperially commissioned anthology of waka poetry during the Heian period. It was ordered to be compiled by Shirakawa-in and compiled by Minamoto no Toshiyori. The first draft was submitted to the Imperial Court in 1124 (Tenji 1), but was returned for lacking anything new. A revised version was submitted the following April, but this time it was not accepted for being too biased towards modern poets. The third time, a draft was submitted that restored the three generations of poets, and it was accepted as is. This was in 1126 (Taiji 1). They are called the First Edition, the Second Edition, and the Sanso Edition. Only the first volume of the First Edition remains. The Sanso Edition, which was supposed to be the definitive edition, was not in the possession of the compiler, so the Second Edition was the one that was mainly in circulation. Subsequent imperial anthologies also treated the Sanso Edition as a private anthology. Unlike previous imperial anthologies, this work was made up of half the number of volumes, 10, and was titled "Kinyoshu," a collection of excellent waka poems, which was a new approach. Many of the poems in the Nidobon version were by contemporary poets from the Shirakawa Insei period, and they feature fresh observations of nature and novel expressions. They also reflect the pastoral taste of the Manyoshu that was popular at the time, and as a whole they breathe the fresh air of the times. On the other hand, it is undeniable that they are overwhelmed by technique and humor, and lack the quality of lyricism.
