Albert I

Albert I
1875‐1934
King of Belgium. Reigned 1909-34. Real name: Albert Leopold Clement Marie Meinrad. Second son of Count Philip of Flanders. Married Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria in 1900. He succeeded his uncle Leopold II as king, but Leopold's strong personality lost popularity in his later years over the Congo colony issue. Albert realized that stepping down from the political stage would ensure the security of his throne, and limited his government duties to state affairs only as stipulated in the constitution.
