A binary system in which the distance between the two objects is only about the radius of one of the objects. Close binary systems are known that are close enough to affect the structure and evolution of the atmosphere of the other object. When one object is a star and the other is a dense object such as a white dwarf or neutron star, gas flowing from the star can form an accretion disk around the dense object, or can cause a sudden brightening of a nova or the emission of an X-ray burst.
