… Among the many biographies of saints, martyrs, and miracles produced throughout the Middle Ages, the one that stands out from the early period is the anonymous “Life of Saint Genoveva,” which is thought to date back to around the 8th century, and the fairly literary “Life of Saint Alexis” in vernacular language, which was written in the 11th century. In particular, the “Diplomatic Dialogues” by Caesarius of Heisterbach (c. 1180-c. 1240) was a collection of many interesting episodes and was widely read. The “Diplomatic Dialogues” is a collection of about 180 anecdotes from ancient times to the present, and although the content is diverse, it is thought to have been written by an English scholar, and is generally dominated by religious piety, with many articles that could be considered religious literature. …
