After World War I, the Turkish Revolution led by Kemal Ataturk replaced the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey was established (1923). From then until World War II, Turkey was a one-party state led by the Republican People's Party (Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi) (founded in 1923), which was established by the first president, Kemal Ataturk. After World War II, in the midst of the global trend for democracy, Turkey transitioned to a multi-party system in 1946.
