Founded in 1819 in St. Petersburg, during the Soviet era it was called Leningrad University (officially known as AA Zhdanov State Leningrad University (Leningradskii gosudarstvennyi universitet imeni AAZhdanova, or LGU, after 1948), but in 1991 it was reverted to its former name.
