Ben Badis (English spelling)

The Algerian national movement developed through the following four stages: (1) armed resistance against the conquests in the 19th century, as typified by the resistance of Abd al-Khadir; (2) a cultural movement called the Young Algeria Movement, which aimed at national revival around the time of World War I; (3) a movement for political improvement between the two world wars led by the Union of Muslim Parliamentarians and the Association of Ulama led by Ben Badīs; and (4) a national liberation movement for independence after World War II. Each stage is significant in that it prepared the way for the next stage, and the final stage of (4), the Algerian War, had a major impact on the post-independence political system.
