Kingdom Protista, phylum Foraminifera, family Globigerina. Also called Globigerina. Shell length 0.1-0.5 mm. The oval shell chambers are arranged in a spiral, but the later-formed shell chambers are larger. The shell chambers are made of thin calcareous material, with long spines protruding from the tops of numerous pores. Distributed worldwide from the Eocene epoch of the Cenozoic era to the present. Dead shells may be deposited together with the dead shells of other foraminifera to form Globigerina ooze.

原生生物界有孔虫門タマウキガイ科。グロビゲリナともいう。殻長 0.1～0.5mm。卵円形の殻室が螺旋状に配列するが，あとからできる殻室のほうが大きくなる。殻室は薄い石灰質で，多数の細孔の上から長いとげが出ている。新生代始新世から現在にかけて世界的に分布している。死殻がほかの有孔虫類の死殻とともに沈積して，グロビゲリナ軟泥を形成することがある。
