A perennial plant of the lily family that grows in the sunny grasslands of Rishiri Island and Rebun Island in Hokkaido (illustration). It is also found in northern mainland China, northern Korea, and Siberia. It has underground bulbs and a stem that is 10-25 cm tall. Its overall shape is similar to that of the Chinese lantern plant, but it has beautiful white flowers. It flowers in July and August in a panicle at the top of the stem. There are six perianths and six stamens. The fruit is a capsule. Zygadenus is a small genus consisting of about 10 species, distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Like the closely related Chinese lantern plant, it contains alkaloids in the plant body.

北海道の利尻島･礼文島の明るい草地に生えるユリ科の多年草（イラスト）。中国大陸北部，朝鮮半島北部，シベリアにも分布する。地下には鱗茎があり，茎は高さ10～25cmで，全形はシュロソウに似ているが，花は白色で美しい。花は7～8月，茎頂の円錐花序につく。花被，おしべはそれぞれ6個。果実は蒴果（さくか）である。リシリソウ属Zygadenusは約10種からなる小さな属で，北半球に分布。近縁なシュロソウ属同様，植物体にアルカロイド成分を含む。
