Chromatic polarization

When polarized light is incident on a crystal plate through a polarizer, the refracted light undergoes birefringence and splits into two linearly polarized light beams that are biased in two mutually perpendicular directions. When this is further received by an analyzer and the composite wave of the two polarized light beams is observed, the brightness changes according to the phase difference when monochromatic light is used due to the interference between the two polarized components, and generally appears colored when white light is used. This is called colored or tinted polarization.

偏光子を通して偏光した光を結晶板に入射すると，屈折光は複屈折を起して互いに垂直な2つの方向にかたよった2本の直線偏光に分れて進む。これをさらに検光子で受けて2つの偏光の合成波をみると，2つの偏光成分の干渉によって，単色光を使用した場合は位相差に応じて明るさが変り，白色光を使用すれば一般に色づいて見える。これを色偏光または着色偏光という。
