An old town in Taga County facing the Pacific Ocean in northern Ibaraki Prefecture. It occupies the Juo River basin between Hitachi and Takahagi, and is served by the Joban Line. Influenced by the industrial capital of Hitachi, related companies have moved in, and the town produces industrial products such as electric motors, control panels, and video equipment. The Kushigata coalfield closed in 1973. Cormorants can be caught on the coast for the Nagara River. The KDDI Ibaraki Satellite Communications Station was established here in 1963. 茨城県北部,太平洋に面する多賀郡の旧町。日立・高萩両市の間の十王川流域を占め,常磐線が通じる。工都日立市の影響をうけて関連企業が進出,電動機,制御盤,ビデオ機器などの工業製品を産する。櫛形炭田は1973年閉山。海岸では長良川向けのウミウを捕獲。1963年KDDI茨城衛星通信所が置かれた。2004年11月日立市へ編入。72.12km2。1万3823人(2003)。
