Japanese: 藤沢利喜太郎 - ふじさわりきたろう
Fujisawa Rikitaro - Fujisawa Rikitaro

Mathematician. Born in Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture). After graduating from the Tokyo Kaisei School, he graduated from the Faculty of Science at the University of Tokyo in 1882 (Meiji 15). From the following year, 1883, he studied in England and Germany, listening to lectures by Weierstrass at the University of Berlin, and studying analysis, particularly function theory, at the University of Strasbourg. He returned to Japan in 1887 and became a professor at the Faculty of Science at the Imperial University, earning his Doctor of Science degree in 1891. He attended the Second International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris in 1900 (Meiji 33) as Japan's representative, and gave a lecture on Japanese mathematics. He became a member of the Imperial Academy in 1906, retired from the university in 1921 (Taisho 10), and later served as a member of the House of Peers.

He made an effort to reform the mathematics department at the Imperial University, introducing the German-style seminar method into his lectures, and together with his teacher, Kikuchi Dairoku, he mentored the next generation of mathematicians, producing such outstanding mathematicians as Takagi Teiji and Hayashi Tsuruichi. While he introduced the authentic academic mathematics of Europe, he also introduced the mathematics of life insurance theory and statistics, making great achievements in the field of applied mathematics.
