Xu Dao-ning (English name)

[Birth] Around 970
Died around 1052. A Chinese landscape painter of the Northern Song Dynasty. A native of Hejian (Hebei Province). He is said to have sold medicine in Bianjing (Kaifeng) and painted pictures on the streets as an attraction for the people. Later, during the reign of Emperor Renzong (1022-63), he is thought to have entered the central art world under the patronage of a powerful official. He excelled in the Li Cheng school of landscape painting, and depicted the desolate nature of North China using rough ink-wash techniques. He is thought to have been a painter of the transitional period between Li Cheng and Guo Xi in the North China landscape painting style. His accredited works include Scroll of Xiao Temple in Autumn (Fujii Yurinkan) and Scroll of Streams in Autumn (Freer Gallery of Art).

中国，北宋の山水画家。河間 (河北省) の人。汴京 (開封) で薬売りをし，そのアトラクションとして大道で絵をかいたという。のち仁宗朝 (1022～63) のとき，権臣の庇護を受け中央画壇に出たと考えられる。李成派山水画様式を得意とし，華北の荒涼とした自然を粗放な水墨画法によって描いた。李成から郭煕までの華北山水画様式のなかで過渡期の画家と推測される。伝称作品に『秋山蕭寺図巻』 (藤井有鄰館) ，『谿山秋霽図巻』 (フリーア美術館) などがある。
