An animal tale written by Austrian author Salten. Published in 1923. Born in the thickets of a forest, Bambi, a baby deer, is protected by his mother and lives happily with magpies, squirrels, and jays amidst blooming flowers and budding young trees. But a harsh winter comes, and a fearsome hunter appears, causing Bambi to lose his mother. By spring, when his antlers grow and he falls in love with his childhood friend, the doe Faline, Bambi has become independent, just as the old stag had taught him. The story realistically depicts the nature of the forest, the kindness of the animals that live there, and the fierce struggle for survival, yet tells the story of a life of a kind hearted person that is reminiscent of real life. It was made into a film by Disney in 1942.

オーストリアの作家ザルテン作の動物物語。1923年刊。森の茂みで生まれた子鹿(こじか)のバンビは母鹿に守られ、草花が咲き若木の萌(も)えるなかでカササギ、リス、カケスなどと楽しく暮らす。だが厳しい冬が来、恐ろしい猟師が出没して、母鹿を失った。春、角(つの)が生え、幼なじみの牝(め)鹿ファリーネに愛情を覚えるころ、バンビはかつて年寄りの牡(お)鹿から教わったとおり、立派にひとり立ちしていた。森の自然、そこにすむ動物たちのいたわりや激しい生存競争をリアルに描きながら、しかも人生にも通うような心あるものの一生として物語っている。1942年ディズニーによって映画化された。
