A creeping deciduous shrub of the legume family. Also called Doyo Wisteria. It grows in mountain or lowland forests, wrapping around other trees, and is often found on the edges of evergreen broad-leaved forests in western Japan. The leaves are alternate, odd-pinnate compound leaves consisting of 5-7 pairs of leaflets, and reach 30 cm in length. In summer, slender racemes similar to wisteria, 10-30 cm long, hang down from the leaf axils and produce numerous green-white, butterfly-shaped flowers. After flowering, pods 6-9 cm long are produced. Overall, it resembles Wisteria , but differs in that the inflorescences are axillary.
