High toughness steel

Japanese: 強靱鋼 - きょうじんこう（英語表記）high toughness steel

A general term for steels that have high strength and a certain degree of ductility, i.e. toughness. Metal materials that are tough consume a lot of energy, mainly when they break in tension. Steels for machine construction are examples of steels that require this kind of toughness. Other tough materials that have been developed include piano wire, which is made by cold drawing eutectoid steel and annealing it at low temperatures, and maraging steel, which is made by adding aluminum and titanium to nickel as an alloying element. 高い強さとある程度の延性，すなわち強靱さをもつ鋼の総称。強靱さをもつ金属材料は，主として引張破断のときの消費エネルギーが大きい。このような強靱さを必要とする鋼としては機械構造用鋼がある。また，共析鋼を冷間線引きし，低温焼きなましをして製造するピアノ線や，ニッケルを合金元素としてアルミニウムやチタンを添加したマルエージング鋼も強靱な材料として開発されたものである。【木原諄二】
