A general term for steels that have high strength and a certain degree of ductility, i.e. toughness. Metal materials that are tough consume a lot of energy, mainly when they break in tension. Steels for machine construction are examples of steels that require this kind of toughness. Other tough materials that have been developed include piano wire, which is made by cold drawing eutectoid steel and annealing it at low temperatures, and maraging steel, which is made by adding aluminum and titanium to nickel as an alloying element.
