Misao Tojo

Japanese linguist. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Department of Japanese Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. Served as professor at Hiroshima Higher Normal School (now Hiroshima University), Gakushuin University, and lecturer at the University of Tokyo. Laid the foundations for academic research into Japanese dialects, and was a leading figure. Conducted research across the country, mainly based on dialect documents from around the country, and developed a theory of dialect divisions. His books include Materials on Nanto Dialects (1923), Map of Japanese Dialects: Dialect Divisions of the National Language (1927), and Dialects and Dialectology (1938), as well as the National Dialect Dictionary and Standard Language Classification Dialect Dictionary, which he wrote with the help of Oiwa Masanaka (1909-1972).

国語学者。東京生まれ。東京帝国大学国文学科卒業。広島高等師範学校(現、広島大学)、学習院大学などの教授や東大講師を歴任。日本語の方言の学問的研究の基礎を築き、指導的立場にあった。おもに各地の方言文献を基に全国にわたっての研究を行い、方言区画論を展開した。著書に『南島方言資料』(1923)、『日本方言地図 国語の方言区画』(1927)、『方言と方言学』(1938)のほか、大岩正仲(おおいわまさなか)(1909―1972)の協力による『全国方言辞典』『標準語引分類方言辞典』がある。
