A town in Nishitama County, western Tokyo. It occupies the basin of the upper reaches of the Tama River and its tributary, the Nippara River, and is mostly mountainous. Hikawa, in the center of the town, developed as a post town on the Ome Kaido road. It is the terminus of the Ome Line. Forestry is practiced, and the town also produces shiitake mushrooms and wasabi. Lake Okutama and the Nippara Limestone Caves are both located here, and most of the town area is part of the Chichibu Tama Kai National Park. Area: 225.53 km2.
