1522‐90 One of the leading figures in French humanist jurisprudence. His Latin name was Jacobus Cujacius. He was born in Toulouse as the son of a woolen finisher, and studied law under Ferrier, a disciple of Archert, and acquired humanistic knowledge on his own. He taught Roman law and moved to various universities, including Toulouse, Bourges, Valence, and Turin, but was assigned to Bourges four times and died there. Although he was a Catholic, he did not actively participate in either the New or Old Church, and emphasized the secular nature of jurisprudence.
