Viola di Bordone (English spelling)

...As an instrumental term, it refers to an instrument that is one size smaller than a bass instrument, i.e., an instrument with the next lowest range after a bass instrument, such as a baritone oboe or a baritone saxophone. There is also a low-pitched string instrument called the baritone, which is similar to the viola da gamba, and is also called the viola di bordone (Italian). J. Haydn composed many pieces for this instrument for Prince Esterházy, who loved it.
