Kyushu University

A national university corporation. Its predecessor was the Fukuoka Medical College, which was established in Fukuoka in 1903 (Meiji 36) as a branch college of Kyoto Imperial University. In 1910, Kyushu Imperial University was founded with two branch colleges, Fukuoka Medical College and the newly established College of Technology. In 1919 (Taisho 8), the two branch colleges of Kyushu Imperial University became the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Agriculture was newly established. After World War II, it merged with the old Fukuoka High School and Kurume Technical College to become the new National Kyushu University in 1949 (Showa 24). As a result, the Faculty of Law and Letters was reorganized into three faculties: Law, Economics, and Literature, and the Faculty of Education was newly established. With the addition of the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1964 and the Faculty of Dentistry in 1967, the university had 10 faculties (Arts, Education, Law, Economics, Science, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering, and Agriculture). In 1971, the Medical Technology Junior College was added (reorganized in 2002 to become the Department of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine). In October 2003, the university merged with Kyushu Design Institute, and a new Faculty of Design and a Graduate School of Design and Graduate School of Design Research were established. As of 2010, the university has 11 faculties: Arts, Education, Law, Economics, Science, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering, Design, and Agriculture. The graduate school has 17 graduate schools, including the Graduate School of Humanities, Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies, Graduate School of Mathematics, Graduate School of Medical Sciences, and Graduate School of Science and Technology, and 16 graduate schools, including the Graduate School of Comparative Social and Cultural Studies, Graduate School of Law, Graduate School of Language and Culture, Graduate School of Information Science, and Graduate School of Agriculture.
