A city on the Atlantic coast located 400 km south-southeast of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Population 512,880 (1991). Colonization began in the 1850s, and a fishing village was established. The town was founded in 1874, and developed as a fishing port with the development of Atlantic fishing, and currently accounts for more than 60% of the nation's total catch. It also developed as a resort, with beaches and casinos, and has been called the "Pearl of the Atlantic" and the "Monte Carlo of South America," attracting approximately 2 million summer vacationers every year.
