…The islands are further divided into two groups: the Windward Islands (Îles du Vent) in the east and the Leeward Islands (Îles Sous le Vent) in the west. The Windward Islands include Tahiti, the largest of the islands and home to the capital of French Polynesia, Papeete, as well as Mo'orea, Maiao, Tetiaroa, and Mehetia. The Leeward Islands include Bora Bora, said to be the most beautiful island in the Pacific, as well as Raiatea, Huahine, Maupiti, and several atolls. According to current archaeological findings, the ancestors of the inhabitants of these islands were Polynesians who came from the Marquesas Islands around 800, and from there they colonized many islands in eastern Polynesia, including the Cook Islands, New Zealand, and Hawaii. …
