A city in the Republic of Buryatia, in central-eastern Russia, in southern Eastern Siberia. It is located in the Selenga River valley, about 180 km southwest of the republic's capital, Ulan-Ude. It is a border town along the highway connecting Ulan-Ude and Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. After the Treaty of Kyakhta was signed with China in 1727, the Troitskosavsk Fortress was built near the village of Kyakhta in 1728, and Kyakhta gained importance as a gateway from China to Russia, and developed into a trading center between the two countries. In 1935, Troitskosavsk and Kyakhta merged to form the city of Kyakhta. Industries include shoemaking, bricks, textiles, and meat. Naushki, a railway station connecting Ulan-Ude and Ulaanbaatar, is located about 30 km west of the city. Population: 18,200 (1991 estimate).
