French film actor. Born in Meriel, a suburb of Paris. After working in various jobs, he appeared in music halls and operettas as a chanson singer, and entered the film world with the arrival of talkies. After playing opposite Josephine Baker, he appeared in masterpieces such as "To the Ends of the Earth", "Our Companions", and "Homesickness" by director Josephine Baker in the 1930s, and "The Lower Depths" and "Grand Illusions" by director Jean Renoir, becoming a star representing France.
