A town in Minamimuro County, on the left bank of the downstream Kumano River, at the southern tip of Mie Prefecture. The town produces timber in the mountains and rice in the Onodani River basin. Fruit cultivation and livestock raising are also practiced. There is the Onodani Plum Grove. The Kisei Main Line runs along the coast, and the town is a base for tourism to Dorokyo Gorge. In January 2006, Udono Village in Minamimuro County was incorporated and the town hall became the former Udono Village Hall. Area: 79.62 km2 . Population: 11,896 (2010). 三重県南端,熊野川下流左岸の南牟婁(みなみむろ)郡の町。山地で木材,相野谷(おのだに)川流域では米を産する。果樹栽培,畜産も行う。相野谷梅林がある。沿岸に紀勢本線が通じ,瀞峡(どろきょう)観光の拠点。2006年1月南牟婁郡鵜殿村を編入し,町役場を旧鵜殿村役場とした。79.62km2。1万1896人(2010)。
