Kibushi clay

Japanese: 木節粘土 - きぶしねんど
Kibushi clay
Clay that is produced in close association with the late Neogene lignite beds that develop around Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, Shimagahara region, Mie Prefecture, and Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, as well as the Paleogene coal beds in the Joban Coalfield that straddles Fukushima Prefecture and Ibaraki Prefecture. It has been used since ancient times as a raw material for refractories and ceramics. It contains carbonized plant fragments, and its pattern resembles knots in wood, hence the name. It can be brown, dark brown, gray, dark gray, or gray-blue. It has a greasy luster and is highly adhesive and plastic. In terms of mineral composition, it is mainly composed of the clay mineral kaolinite, but may also contain halloysite and metahalloysite. Fine grains of quartz, zircon, and titanium minerals are mixed in as impurities. It is called Kurokibushi, Shirakibushi, and Amekibushi due to differences in color.
