…But in 1915, Japanese scientists Katsusaburo Yamagiwa and Koichi Ichikawa became the first in the world to artificially create cancer through stimulation, after years of painstaking experimentation in which they smeared tar on the ears of rabbits. Encouraged by this success, a group of British chemists energetically searched for carcinogens, and in 1928, E. Kennaway (1881-1958) revealed the carcinogenicity of the synthetic hydrocarbon 1,2,5,6-dibenzanthracene, and in 1933, J. Cook identified the carcinogen in tar as 3,4-benzopyrene. Meanwhile, in 1932, Takaoki Sasaki and Tomizo Yoshida succeeded in inducing liver cancer in rats by feeding them o -aminoazotoluene, a type of azo dye, mixed with their feed. …
