After graduating from the Moscow Conservatory, he worked in theater companies in Yaroslavl and Moscow, and from 1898 he was active as an actor at the Moscow Art Theatre. He was a leading figure at the Moscow Art Theatre, known for his performances that combined comedy and lyricism. Some of his most notable roles include Protasov in Tolstoy's The Living Dead, Epikhodov in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, Pilgrim Luke in Gorky's The Lower Depths, and Nozdryov in Gogol's Dead Souls.
