A man of letters in the mid-Heian period. His original surname was Taguchi, but he later changed it. He studied under Tachibana Masamichi, and passed the Horyakushi (examination for promotion to government officials) during the Eien era (987-89). He later served as Ouchiki and Shikibu Shoyu (junior assistant minister). He was known as a brilliant writer, and was called "the greatest Confucian scholar of his time (during the Ichijo era)," but he also received some notable negative criticism, such as when Oe Masafusa criticized his style of writing for being too respectful of the classics and lacking any new ideas (in "Godansho"). In 997, he compiled Chinese poetry from the seven courts after Engi as "Fusoshu" (12 volumes), but Masafusa was also critical of this. The year after his death, his wife presented this "Fusoshu" to the then Minister of the Left, Fujiwara no Michinaga. His family anthology "Saimeishū" was listed in the catalogue of Fujiwara no Michinori's library (first half of the 12th century), but it no longer exists. His poems and prose are collected in "Honchō Bunsui" and other works. One theory is that he died at the age of 34.

平安中期の文人。本姓は田口,のち改姓。橘正通に師事し,永延年間(987～89)に方略試(官人登用試験)に及第。のち大内記,式部少輔などを歴任。名文家として知られ,「当時(一条朝)の名儒」と称される一方,大江匡房からその文体について古典を尊重しすぎて新意が全くないと酷評される(『江談抄』)など,悪評も目立つ。長徳3(997)年,延喜以後7朝の漢詩を『扶桑集』(12巻)として編集しているが,これについても匡房は批判的。この『扶桑集』は没した翌年,妻から時の左大臣藤原道長に献上されている。家集『斉名集』は藤原通憲の蔵書目録(12世紀前半)に載るが現存せず,その詩文は『本朝文粋』などに収められる。一説に享年は34とも。
