Niisato [village] - Niisato
A village in Shimohei District in central-eastern Iwate Prefecture. Population 4,035 (1995). It borders Miyako City to the east. It is a mountain village in a canyon surrounded by the tributaries of the Kitakami Highlands, with the Kariya River flowing southeast through the center and joining the Hei River, which flows east in the southern part. The JR Yamada Line runs along the Hei River, and the Iwaizumi Line runs north from Moichi Station along the Kariya River. More than 90% of the total area is covered by forests, and there are many lumber-related industries. Kariya is home to a plywood factory that boasts one of the largest production volumes in the Tohoku region. [Matsuhashi Koji]

Niisato [New Village]

A village in Seta County in the southeastern part of Gunma Prefecture. Population 14,956 (1995). Occupying the southeastern slope of Mount Akagi, it is located halfway between Maebashi City and Kiryu City. Pig farming and other livestock farming are the main agricultural industry, but vegetable production is also thriving. The town is particularly known for its burdock. Silkworm farming is also practiced. Carp are farmed in the Hayakawa Reservoir, which was built as a water source for irrigating reservoirs. In recent years, housing development has progressed and the population has increased. There is a settlement on the slopes of Mount Akagi that was settled after World War II. In Takei, the central settlement, there is the remains of the Takei Abandoned Temple Pagoda (history), which is said to have been built in the early Nara period, and on the top of the mountain there is a three-story stone pagoda (Important Cultural Property).

にいさと【新里[村]】

群馬県南東部,勢多郡の村。人口1万4956(1995)。赤城山の南東斜面を占め,前橋市と桐生市の中間に位置する。養豚など畜産が農業の中心で,野菜生産も盛ん。特にゴボウの産地として知られる。養蚕もなお行われている。また,溜池灌漑用の水源としてつくられた早川貯水池ではコイの養殖が行われる。近年,宅地開発が進み人口が増加している。赤城山腹には第2次大戦後入植した開拓地がある。中心集落の武井には奈良時代初期の築造といわれる武井廃寺塔跡(史)が,山上には塔婆石造三層塔(重要文化財)がある。
