Kim Seong-il

An official in the mid-Joseon dynasty. His pen name was Shijun and his title was Hakuho. He passed the civil service examination in 1568 (the first year of King Seonjo's reign). He belonged to the Eastern faction in the government. In 1590 (the 18th year of Tensho's reign), he came to Japan as a deputy communications envoy. In his report to King Seonjo of Korea, he reported that there was no possibility of Japan invading Korea, contrary to the Western faction's chief envoy Hwang Yun-gil, and this was supported by Right Councillor Ryu Seong-ryong. When the Imjin Waeran (Imjin War) broke out, he was appointed as the envoy and inspector of the right province of Gyeongsang (western part), but he died of an illness while working at his post.

朝鮮王朝中期の官人。日本語読みは「きん・せいいつ」。字は士純,号は鶴峯。宣祖1(1568)年科挙に合格。官界では東人派に属した。天正18(1590)年,通信副使として来日。朝鮮国王宣祖への復命に際して,西人派の正使黄允吉とは反対に,日本に朝鮮侵略の可能性なしと報告し,右議政柳成竜もこれを支持した。壬辰倭乱(文禄の役)が起きると慶尚右道(西部)招撫使,同観察使に任じられたが,任地で活動中病死。
