A type of bronze. There are three types of bronze: those in which phosphorus is used to deoxidize the bronze so that almost no phosphorus remains in the alloy, those in which some phosphorus is added to bronze with 10% or less tin so that phosphorus remains, and those in which 0.05 to 0.5% phosphorus is added to bronze with 10% or more tin. The first two are used as wrought materials, and the latter for castings. Phosphor bronze, which is 8% tin and 0.03 to 0.35% phosphorus, is mainly processed into plates and is widely used as an excellent spring material. Phosphor bronze castings are also corrosion-resistant, hard, and wear-resistant, so they are used for machine parts and paper-making rolls.
