A legendary emperor from ancient China. Sima Qian wrote the Records of the Grand Historian based on the reigns of five virtuous and holy emperors, or the Five Emperors. One of these, Zhuan Shu, is said to be the grandson of the Yellow Emperor. He was also called the Gaoyang clan because he was the first to establish a state in Gaoyang. Zhuan Shu was a man of far-sightedness and wise thinking, and clarified the path between heaven and man. He was also blessed by the divine spirits to correct the principles of honor and inferiority, controlled the five elements, and taught and guided the people, so that it is said that there was no one who did not submit to him. It is thought that these legends, like those of the other Five Emperors, were idealized and fabricated, but according to the Shan Hai Jing and other sources, Zhuan Shu was a god who died once and then resurrected, or that he commanded a god called Chong to push up the heavens and a god called Li to lower the earth, making the heavens and the earth as far apart as they are today. In this way, the Zhuan Shu that appears in ancient creation myths is thought to convey a more original image.
