...Rice from the Irrawaddy Delta in the hinterland was shipped from here to overseas destinations. The town was known as Kusima during the Pagan period (11th to 13th centuries) and Kosmin in the 16th century. In the late 17th century, it was the site of a representative office of the British East India Company.
