From the end of the Heian period to the Sengoku period, this samurai clan had its base near what is now Mochizuki-cho, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano Prefecture. It is said that the clan is an offshoot of the Shigeno clan, an ancient Shinano clan, and that it began when Shigeno Tamemichi's third son, Hiroshige, settled there as the farm supervisor of Mochizuki Ranch and took the name Mochizuki Saburo. The Mochizuki clan was among the samurai who participated in the Hogen Rebellion (1156) at the end of the Heian period, and later followed Minamoto no Yoshinaka during the Jisho-Juei Civil War, and became vassals after the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate. After the fall of the Kamakura Shogunate, the Mochizuki clan supported the Nakasendai Rebellion (1335), which was started by supporting Hojo Tokiyuki.
